Taboo Education

Rehumanising the Way We Talk About Death

Our Mission

At Taboo Education, we're here to change the way people see death — not as something to fear or avoid, but as a normal, natural part of life. Death affects every single one of us, and yet our culture has made it uncomfortable, awkward, and taboo to talk about.

But it wasn’t always this way. A hundred years ago, people died at home. Families cared for their dead. Children grew up understanding death as part of life. Now, we outsource, sanitise, and avoid it — and we’re paying the price.

We believe that honest conversations about death can change lives. When we avoid talking about it, it has serious consequences:

  • Financially – Families are often caught off guard by the high costs of funerals, exploited by an industry that thrives on silence.

  • Environmentally – We're running out of land to bury the dead, and cremation contributes to carbon emissions and resource depletion.

  • Legally – Many people don’t understand their rights when it comes to death, dying, and their own bodies — and governments don’t always protect them.

  • Socially – Schools are left to manage grief without training, one-third of Australians don’t have a valid Will, and support around death is inconsistent at best.

That’s where Taboo Education comes in. We run engaging, accessible, and sometimes even funny workshops and talks that help people, families, workplaces and schools build the confidence to face death with clarity and compassion.

It’s never too early — or too late — to start the conversation. One step at a time, one chat at a time, we’re making death less taboo and more human.
